Softball

An Amazing Community of Athletes, Family, and Friends

Welcome to Softball. Softball is an exciting team sport in Special Olympics played between two teams. Every team aims in scoring as many runs possible, against the opponents by striking the ball with a bat. It is a direct descendant of baseball although there are some key differences: softballs are larger than baseballs, and the pitches are thrown underhand rather than overhand.

As softball is a TEAM SPORT,  be aware that once the teams are formed only those players who plan to participate in the scheduled tournaments will be able to participate in the softball program.   This allows the teams to practice together as a “team”, which is essential to competition.  (We do this for all team sports now!) We look forward to another great season of practices and tournaments!

2019 SOFTBALL SEASON

This year’s season kicks off on Tuesday, June 18 at Somerset Elementary School at 6:00 pm.  If you plan to participate this year, it’s important that you be there (or make arrangements) as we plan to form teams that night. Make sure to bring your registration form and $25 payment to participate at state.

TIME and DATES

Tuesdays, 6-8pm:

Everyone meets at Somerset Elementary School on June 18 and 25.  Then, on July 2 the season is divided with those assigned to the Moreland Field practicing there and those assigned to the Somerset Field practicing there.  Note that there is no practice on August 6th.

LOCATION:

Practice will be held at the following locations:

Somerset Elementary School, 1355 Dodd Rd, Mendota Heights, MN 55118
Moreland Elementary School, 217 Moreland Ave W, West St Paul, MN 55118

You will be assisgned a field once teams are formed.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Athletes who are beginning players or who are still learning, MUST have their staff/parents stay at the field with them throughout the practice for safety reasons.

If we do not have enough volunteers/coaches, then parents/staff will be asked to assist with their athlete’s team, so that we have enough help to accommodate everyone who registers.  If we do not get help from parents/staff & we are in need of help, we will need to limit the number of participants in SB!

AREA AND STATE COMPETITIONS

The softball teams participate in two competitions: the Area Meet and the State Competition. Athletes must participate in the Area Meet if they plan to advance to the State Competition.
