Softball is an exciting team sport in Special Olympics played between two teams. Every team aims in scoring as many runs possible, against the opponents by striking the ball with a bat. It is a direct descendant of baseball although there are some key differences: softballs are larger than baseballs, and the pitches are thrown underhand rather than overhand.

As softball is a TEAM SPORT,  be aware that once the teams are formed only those players who plan to participate in the scheduled tournaments will be able to participate in the softball program.

All teams should meet at the Moreland Elementary Fields (217 West Moreland Avenue, West St Paul, 55118) on June 26 for orientation and to get team assignments and practice locations.  In addition to the Moreland Fields, we will also practice at Garlough Elementary, 1740 Charlton Avenue, West St. Paul, 55118.  All fields are behind the respective schools.

This year the Gold Team (advanced) will be participating in the Inver Grove Heights Men’s League.  There is still an additional $25 to play due to league costs.  Members of the team are expected to help with a fundraiser to help pay the costs.

Athletes will be assigned to teams on a first-come, first-serve, first-paid basis – so you must pay the $25 fee in order to be placed on a team.  If the fee isn’t included with your registration form, you will not be placed on a team until the fee is paid – by then, some of the upper level teams may already be full – so pay the fee now to assure yourself a spot!

Athletes who are just beginning to play or who are still learning, MUST have their Staff/Parents stay at the field with them throughout the practice for safety reasons.  Also, if we do not have enough volunteers/coaches, parents/staff will be asked to assist with their athlete’s team, so that we have enough help to accommodate everyone who registers. If we do not receive the help needed from parents/staff, we will need to limit the number of players!!
