Floor Hockey

An Amazing Community of Athletes, Family, and Friends

Greetings floor-hockey (aka poly hockey) fans.  Floor hockey is adapted from the game of ice hockey and played indoors on a gymnasium floor (which is why it is often referred to as floor hockey).  The Stars host several teams, each composed of six players, including a goalie.  As in all Special Olympics sports, athletes are grouped in competition divisions according to ability level and age (athletes are not grouped by gender, though).

As floor-hockey is a TEAM SPORT,  be aware that once the teams are formed only those players who plan to participate in the scheduled tournaments will be able to participate in the softball program.   This allows the teams to practice together as a “team”, which is essential to competition.  (We do this for all team sports now!) We look forward to another great season of practices and tournaments!

2019-20 FLOOR HOCKEY SEASON

As soon as we have information about this year’s Flag Football season we will post it here. Meanwhile, this would be a good time to make sure your Special Olympics’ Application is up-to-date. Remember – the entire application must be renewed every three years.

When and Where

To Be Announced

Important Notes

—Athletes who are beginning players or who are still learning, MUST have their staff/parents stay at the field with them throughout the practice for safety reasons.

—If we do not have enough volunteers/coaches, then parents/staff will be asked to assist with their athlete’s team, so that we have enough help to accommodate everyone who registers. If we do not get help from parents/staff, we will need to limit the number of participants in Floor Hockey!

AREA AND STATE COMPETITIONS

The floor hockey teams participate in two competitions: the Area Meet and the State Competition. Athletes must participate in the Area Meet if they plan to advance to the State Competition.

Team Assignments

Athletes will be assigned to teams on a first-come, first-serve, first-paid basis. If the fee isn’t included with your registration form, you will not be placed on a team until the fee is paid.

Jerseys

For those who do not have a HOCKEY JERSEY, a jersey will be lent to these athletes for the season. We most likely will not be ordering additional jerseys to be purchased, as we would need an order of at least 24 jerseys to receive a reasonable price per jersey! Let Marcie know ASAP if you want to borrow a jersey – she will need your size and will bring jerseys to practices for athletes to try on for fitting purposes.

REGISTER

It is important for athletes to register for participation, whether competing in both the area and state level competitions, or just at the area meet. Don’t forget you also need an up-to-date application with Special Olympics of Minnesota.  Registration is not open at this time.
