We are the South Region Stars and we welcome any athlete who fulfills the requirements set by Special Olympics of Minnesota and abides by its standards of conduct to become a member of the Stars.

Become a Star
Bring your friends and family, too. Our team is managed and coached by a caring cooperative of volunteers. Without them, we could not exist. Volunteers are needed to assist in many aspects.
Become an Athlete
STEP ONE: To be eligible to participate in Special Olympics, athletes must be at least 8 years old and identified by an agency or professional as having one of the following conditions: a) intellectual disability; b) cognitive delay as determined by standardized measures such as intelligence quotient or other accepted measures; or c) a closely related developmental disability which means functional limitations in both general learning and adaptive skills.
STEP TWO: Review the Code of Conduct, which establishes a standard of athlete behavior that ensures the safety and well-being of all athletes involved in training and competition. Go here to read the Code of Conduct: Code of Conduct
STEP THREE: Complete the Special Olympics of Minnesota application for participation. This application includes a medical, which must be completed and signed by a physician before athletes will be allowed to participate. (This application must be renewed every three years to ensure SOMN has the most up-to-date information. Click here for the application: Application for Participation
Become a Volunteer
Whether you’re coaching an athlete or helping with paperwork, handing out awards or celebrating a victory, timing a runner or helping plan a social event or fundraiser, you’re touching the lives of our team members. Volunteer roles are based on your interest and availability, as well as the needs of the team and programs. Special Olympics athletes work hard to overcome the odds and can do so with your help.
For safety and insurance purposes, all volunteers who work directly with our athletes must complete an application through Special Olympics of Minnesota and take a brief on-line quiz. Volunteers also need to provide a copy of identification as a background check will be conducted.
