The Team

Our aquatics competitions hold something for everyone, regardless of skill. There are many events from which to choose. Whether an athlete requires a flotation device or swims with the best of racers, we've got it covered.    Our goal is simple: to assist our athletes in reaching their individual potential.

We begin practicing on Saturday, January 7 at Heritage Middle School, 121 Butler Avenue, West Saint Paul. Our practice schedule is based upon athlete abilities as follows:

Session I is held from 1 pm - 1:50 pm. It is divided into beginning and intermediate swimmers. (Swimmers who cannot swim a full length of the pool independently must attend the first session. In addition, athletes who have difficulty following directions should swim during this time as well.)

Session II is held from 2 pm - 2:50 pm and is reserved for our more advanced swimmers who are fine-tuning their skills for competition. This session is divided into intermediate+ and advanced swimmers. Intermediate+ swimmers are able to swim two lengths of the pool without direction or assistance. Athletes are taught in groups, and coaches are not always in the water.

Special Notes for Swimmers

Safety First:
Only athletes and coaches who are registered with SOMN will be allowed in the pool.

We Start at Start:
We will do our best to begin practices on time this year.  Although we know it's not always possible, any time you can arrive early would be most appreciated.

Mission Focused:
While we welcome swimmers who don't intend to compete, our mission is to prepare athlete for competition.  Please understand that this requires our coaches to focus on those athletes when staff is not adequate for more personal guidance.

  • Eligibility: Athletes cannot be allowed to practice or compete unless they have an up-to-date application and physical on file with Special Olympics of Minnesota.
  • Check Conflicts: Please add the competition schedule to your calendar so that if you are planning a vacation, you can try to work around these dates. Keep in mind that athletes must compete at the area aournament in order to compete in the state competition.
  • Remain on Site: If you are sending an athlete who is a beginner; requires one-on-one attention; or has a behavioral issue, the athlete must be accompanied by a responsible adult who is to remain with the athlete.
  • Group Homes: Out of respect for all athletes who want to participant, we ask that you provide us with one Level 1 coach when bringing three or more athletes to practice and competition. We are required to document a specific ratio of athletes to coaches; if we can't meet that ratio, some athletes may not be able to participate.
